Chinese Mainland Slams DPP for Blocking Taiwan Compatriots at 80th War Commemoration

Think you’ve heard all the cross-strait drama? The Chinese mainland has just ramped it up 🔥 – accusing Taiwan region’s DPP authorities of blocking Taiwan compatriots from a major 80th-anniversary WWII commemoration in Beijing.

On September 3, Tiananmen Square is set to host a grand gathering and military parade marking the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Organisers were inviting voices from all walks of life, including Taiwan compatriots. But Taiwan authorities recently hit pause, barring public servants from joining and warning any "cooperation with the mainland" could lead to penalties. Some applications to attend have already been rejected.

  • Event: 80th-anniversary WWII victory parade in Beijing (Sept 3)
  • Restriction: Public servants from Taiwan region banned from attending
  • Mainland’s Take: DPP’s move is "a contemptible betrayal of history and the nation," says Zhu Fenglian
  • Big Picture: Honouring sacrifices, promoting unity across the Taiwan Strait

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stressed that people in Taiwan made huge sacrifices during the war. She argued that both sides of the Taiwan Strait should honour those sacrifices together, drawing strength from history to push for unity and national rejuvenation.

With tensions rising and cross-strait ties under the microscope, many are watching to see if there’s room for dialogue or if the DPP will stand firm. One thing’s for sure: history and politics are clashing on a global stage. Stay tuned! 🌏🕊️
