China Unveils First Public Report on Security Assurances for Non-Nuclear States

Heads up! On Wednesday, the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA) and the Strategic Planning Research Institute of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) dropped their first-ever public report on security assurances for non-nuclear-weapon states! 📜🔍

Clocking in at six chapters and over 11,000 Chinese characters, the study dives into major countries’ nuclear policies, global stakes, and the hurdles ahead. It also dishes out expert tips on building international consensus and moving toward a binding legal framework.

Why it matters: legally binding security guarantees can fast-track disarmament, lower nuclear risks, amp up non-proliferation, and back global peace and security. ☮️

CACDA president Cheng Jingye highlights that wiping out the nuclear threat is a win for all humanity. Legally binding assurances are a crucial step to make that happen, especially amid growing calls from non-nuclear states for a solid legal framework.

On the flip side, Luo Qingping, Party secretary and chairman of CNNC’s research institute, points out that these guarantees are key to reaching both disarmament and non-proliferation goals. His team’s report maps out the issue’s history, recent trends, and practical negotiation steps.

This first-of-its-kind study shows how Chinese think tanks are leveling up the peace game, driving momentum for global arms control and protecting our shared future. 🌏🔐
