Bringing ‘Red Culture’ to the World: Xi’an’s Translation Dialogue

Calling all culture buffs and history nerds! 🎓 On September 21 in Xi'an (capital of Shaanxi Province, Chinese mainland), top translators and writers from China and the UK gathered to explore how "red culture" translation breathes new life into revolutionary stories. 🇨🇳

The event marked the International Day of Peace and the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Hosted by the Translators Association of China and the Shaanxi Translators Association, it sparked a vibrant cross-cultural chat.

Writer He Gu dove into the heart of the "red spirit," highlighting the sacrifice and unity that powered the revolutionary era. He stressed that making history relatable for today's generation requires storytelling that's both authentic and emotionally honest.

Drawing on lessons from the Han Dynasty, writer Mu Tao urged a balance between creativity and respect for original texts. He reminded everyone that staying true to historical context ensures translations remain meaningful and impactful.

British translator Robin Gilbank shared insights from over a decade in Shaanxi, defining the "Yan'an Spirit" as everyday resilience, innovation and optimism. He even quoted American journalist Agnes Smedley to show how heroism and fact-seeking can inspire readers across borders. His tip for young explorers?
