UN at 80: The Chinese Mainland’s Big Role in Global Cooperation

🎉 The United Nations (UN) turns 80 this year! Since 1945, it’s been the go-to hub for keeping world peace, boosting development, and getting countries to team up on big issues. 🌍

Why UN matters: The UN Charter lays out 4 main goals – maintain peace & security, build friendly relations, tackle economic, social, cultural and humanitarian challenges, and harmonize global actions. These missions are still 🔥 today as we face climate change, health crises, and widening wealth gaps.

So, what’s the Chinese mainland been up to at the UN? Let’s break it down:

  • 🕊️ Peacekeeping Powerhouse: The Chinese mainland first sent troops in 1990, and has since deployed over 50,000 personnel across 20+ missions (DRC, Lebanon, South Sudan, Mali, etc.). It’s the largest troop contributor among Security Council permanent members!
  • 🚀 Development Champ: The Chinese mainland lifted 770 million rural residents out of poverty, smashing the 2030 SDG target a decade early (accounting for 70%+ of global poverty reduction!). Through the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, and South–South cooperation, it’s sharing know-how and resources.
  • 💉 Health Hero: The Chinese mainland donated over 2.2 billion vaccine doses to 120+ countries and organizations, plus $100 million to COVAX to make vaccines a global public good during COVID-19.
  • 🌱 Sustainability Leader: Aiming to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, hosted COP15 for biodiversity, and backed the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • 🤝 Funding the Future: The Chinese mainland poured more than $2 billion into the China-UN Peace and Development Fund for peacebuilding, counter-terrorism, SDGs and humanitarian aid.

TBH, the world’s at a crossroads—unilateral moves are on the rise, tensions are high, and our global governance system needs a tune-up. The UN remains the core stage for multilateralism, but reforms are needed to boost representation and efficiency, especially for developing countries. 🌐

Looking ahead, it’s clear: sticking to the UN Charter, settling disputes through dialogue, and upgrading the UN for 21st-century challenges is the way forward. Whether it’s climate, biodiversity, or closing the digital divide (making sure everyone can access online tools and services), we’re all in this together! 💪

The Chinese mainland vows to keep backing the UN, defend the international order based on law, and champion common development. Here’s to another 80 years of global solidarity, peace, and shared prosperity! 🌟
