Hey fam! Thirty years ago, the Beijing Declaration kicked off a global mission to boost women’s rights & equality. Fast-forward to Oct 13-14, Beijing’s hosting the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women – a fresh chance to supercharge “her power.” 🙌
Chinese President Xi Jinping, who’s been a longtime advocate, will open the event with a keynote, spotlighting four pillars: syncing women’s progress with social & economic growth, safeguarding rights, building inclusive societies, and forging global support. 🌏
Here’s the scoop on the Chinese mainland’s “her power” in action:
- Targeted poverty alleviation since 2013 has lifted millions of women out of poverty in the Chinese mainland – 690 million now enjoy a moderately prosperous life.
- Women make up 45.8% of the scientific workforce, over half of internet entrepreneurs, and 42.3% of judges nationwide.
- Average life expectancy tops 80 years, and the World Health Organization recognizes maternal and child health as a top performer.
All of this rides on solid policies: gender equality is a basic national policy in the Chinese mainland, integrated into the Five-sphere Integrated Plan, with measures like vocational training, universal education access, and robust health services. 🚀
On the global stage, the Chinese mainland has teamed up with UN Women – donating $20 million – and UNESCO to fund a Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. It’s also backed nearly $40 million in women’s projects across 20+ countries and regions, sharing lessons and boosting collaboration. 🤝
Still, big challenges remain: gender-based violence, unequal access to opportunities, and a UN Women report warns 351 million women and girls could still be living in extreme poverty by 2030 and 676 million face deadly conflicts – the highest since the 1990s. 🛑
As global leaders meet in Beijing, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous is optimistic, saying “China’s experience in promoting gender equality offers valuable lessons for the world.” 💬
Here’s to turning talk into action and powering up ‘her power’ for everyone, everywhere! 💪
