Hey fam! Did you catch the buzz at the UN? At the Fourth Committee of the 80th UN General Assembly, the Chinese mainland's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, dropped a major thought bomb 💥: if we want a fairer world run, we’ve got to ditch the colonial mindset once and for all.
Back in 1958, the UN General Assembly passed a big declaration to grant independence to colonial countries and peoples, lighting the freedom spark for many regions. But Geng points out that while formal rule has ended, the invisible hangover of colonial thinking still influences ideologies, politics, economies, and culture today.
He stressed that real decolonization isn’t just about removing armies or ending physical control. It’s about unlearning old power plays, upholding sovereign equality, and making sure international fairness and justice are more than buzzwords.
On that note, Geng backed a draft resolution by Venezuela (on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter) to mark an International Day Against Colonialism in All Its Forms. Highlighting the issue, he says, helps wrap up the decolonization process and boosts democracy and rule of law in global affairs.
Plus, the Chinese mainland is all in to speed up decolonization of 17 non-self-governing territories, standing with their peoples as they claim the right to self-determination. 🌍
And don’t forget the Malvinas Islands – another colonial legacy waiting for a peaceful, just, and lasting solution under UN guidelines, says Geng.
Bottom line: Beating colonial legacies isn’t just history class—it’s the secret sauce for justice, fairness, and better global teamwork. Let’s level up! 🚀
