China Urges Cut of Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan Authorities

Ever felt global politics were way too serious? Well, here’s a hot take fresh from Beijing…

At a Monday daily briefing, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, got straight to the point: maintaining so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan authorities leads nowhere 🌪️.

Guo was responding to a call by a Paraguayan official who wanted a serious debate on new diplomatic and trade links between Paraguay and the Chinese mainland. But Guo stressed that the one-China principle—a global consensus that recognizes only one China (including the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan)—is a basic norm in international relations.

He added that no amount of side chats will shake the strong international commitment to this principle or slow down the overriding trend of the times towards China reunification. In simpler terms, official links with Taiwan authorities just are not on the table 📉.

Guo urged the governments of the very few individual countries including Paraguay to see the true picture, listen to the visionaries, not turn a blind eye to the will of the people, and make the right political decision early to serve the fundamental and long-term interests of their people.
