China Trials Commercial Satellite IoT Services to Boost Connectivity

Hey tech fam! 🚀 On November 22, the Chinese mainland kicked off a two-year commercial trial of satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services to shake up the satellite comms scene and fuel new industries.

Satellite IoT uses satellites to connect tons of devices on land, at sea, and in the air, sending data in real time. Think of sensors in rice paddies along the Mekong Delta or drone fleets buzzing above Jakarta’s skyline 🌐🛰️

This trial, running through late 2027, aims to:

  • Diversify market supply and spark fresh startups
  • Boost service capabilities with reliable coverage
  • Build secure, scalable models for future rollouts

It supports eligible companies to join, following local laws and regulations. This move is set to supercharge sectors like marine fisheries, transport & logistics, energy & water, emergency comms, the low-altitude economy, and the industrial Internet.

In August 2025, the Chinese mainland’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also released guidance to open up market access, giving the industry a clear roadmap for growth.

For innovators across South and Southeast Asia, this leap means more connectivity options—from tea estates in Assam to fish farms off Phuket. Keep an eye on this space as satellite IoT reshapes our digital future!
