China Urges Multilateralism at OPCW’s 30th Meeting

🌍 This week at the 30th Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CSP-30), China made a big call for true teamwork in keeping our world safe from chemical threats. At a side event hosted by the Chinese delegation, senior diplomat Wang Daxue noted that geopolitical drama has been shaking up the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). “Decision-making by consensus is getting scarce, and votes are becoming the new normal,” he said. 🤔

Instead of standing on the sidelines, China rolled out a position paper with four fresh initiatives:

  • Reaffirm the Convention’s purpose: keep the ban on chemical weapons rock solid 🛡️
  • Uphold multilateralism: work together, not apart 🤝
  • Protect developing countries’ rights: no country gets left behind 🌱
  • Boost solidarity: share knowledge, coordinate action 🌐

Delegates from Brazil, Uganda, Venezuela, Russia, Qatar and Mongolia also gave a thumbs-up for this push. As Uganda’s Mirjam Blaak Sow put it, “Consensus isn’t always easy these days, but it’s the backbone of trust in global forums.”

Why it matters: in our interconnected world—where digital threats and misinformation can spread at lightning speed—keeping the OPCW focused on science and solidarity (not politics) is key to protecting everyone. 💡
