📣 At a Thursday press conference, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded strongly to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent emphasis on the San Francisco Peace Treaty.
He noted that Takaichi labeled the San Francisco Peace Treaty as "illegal and invalid" while overlooking vital postwar documents like the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation. These two documents are recognized under international law and reaffirmed in both the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
Guo added that Takaichi’s approach undermines the political foundation of China-Japan relations, disregards UN authority, and challenges the postwar international order. He also accused her of trying to revive the "theory of undetermined Taiwan status."
Describing her stance as "a mistake on top of a mistake," Guo urged Japan to reflect, retract the remarks, and show its commitments through concrete actions.
🔥 Why it matters: This diplomatic spat shows how historical treaties still shape regional ties and international norms today.
