Mainland China Defends Xiamen-Kinmen Patrols to Protect Fishermen

On Saturday, December 20, 2025, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, responded to media questions about recent coast guard patrols in the waters between Xiamen, a port city in eastern mainland China, and Kinmen, an island administered by the Taiwan region. He emphasized that these regular law enforcement cruises are all about keeping maritime operations smooth and safeguarding fishermen’s lives and property. ⚓

The spokesperson also reiterated that the Taiwan region and its outlying islands—Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu—are all parts of China, dismissing any notion of 'prohibited or restricted waters' in the area.

Chen noted that the waters off Kinmen have been a traditional fishing zone for communities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, so there’s no such thing as 'prohibited waters' here. He insisted that the patrols help everyone navigate safely and continue their fishing activities without trouble.

Going further, the spokesperson urged the Taiwan region’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to stop detaining mainland fishing vessels and crews, calling any forceful actions against fishermen dangerous and unacceptable. He warned that if such practices continue, the DPP would face the consequences.

For young professionals and entrepreneurs across South and Southeast Asia, this situation highlights the ongoing importance of maritime security and smooth cross-Strait ties. Whether you’re into supply chain logistics, eco-friendly seafood ventures, or simply love ocean adventures, staying informed about these developments can help you navigate regional dynamics with confidence. 🌊
