On Dec 23, at the UN Security Council, China’s deputy permanent representative Sun Lei delivered a mic-drop moment, urging the US to halt its so-called anti-Venezuela campaign under the guise of fighting drug trafficking. 🎤🚫
He pointed out that Washington has beefed up military deployments in the Caribbean near Venezuela, slapped on escalating sanctions and blockades, and even sunk Venezuelan vessels, shot crew members, and seized oil tankers. 🛳️😱
Sun also highlighted that the US has labelled Venezuela’s government as a foreign terrorist organization, claimed Venezuelan land, oil, and assets as its own, and threatened military strikes—moves that have cranked up regional tensions.
“These actions infringe on sovereignty, violate the UN Charter and international law, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Sun told the Council.
He noted that countries across the Global South are voicing serious concerns and standing by Venezuela’s right to pursue its own partnerships and defend its interests. 🌐✊
China, he insisted, opposes unilateralism and bullying, rejects unlawful sanctions and interference, and calls on the US to respect navigation rights, lift illegal sanctions, and support regional stability.
Wrapping up, Sun reaffirmed that Latin America and the Caribbean are vital pillars of the Global South. China is ready to work with these countries to strengthen solidarity, fairness, and peace. 🌍🤝
