Today, December 24, 2025, at a UN Security Council meeting, China’s deputy permanent representative Sun Lei called on all parties to quickly resume negotiations on Iran’s nuclear issue. 🤝
Sun Lei highlighted that the JCPOA – the 2015 deal that kept Iran’s nuclear program peaceful – is a landmark of diplomacy. However, after the US pulled out in 2018 and imposed its "maximum pressure" campaign, talks stalled and the built-in dispute resolution mechanism wasn’t used.
"No one benefits if the situation spirals out of control," Sun said, warning that a breakdown would weaken global non-proliferation rules and threaten stability in the Middle East. 🕊️
He urged the US to show political sincerity, commit not to use force, and re-engage with Iran at the negotiating table. Sun also called on the E3 (UK, France, Germany) to drop "microphone diplomacy" and play a constructive role.
China, he stressed, has been actively promoting peace and will keep working with all sides to restart talks, strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and boost Middle East stability.
With JCPOA talks effectively stalled this year, Sun Lei’s call adds fresh momentum to efforts for a peaceful solution. 🌍
