China Condemns Israel’s Somaliland Recognition at UN Meeting

This week, at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, China’s deputy permanent representative, Sun Lei, voiced strong opposition to Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, as a sovereign state. 🌍

Sun Lei stressed that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the heart of the UN Charter. He urged Israel to reverse its move and warned against any external support for separatist forces in Somalia. 🛑

China also called on Somaliland authorities to stop separatist activities, cut ties with outside backers, and return to dialogue with Somalia’s federal government as soon as possible. 🤝

With Somalia at a critical juncture in its political and security transition, Sun Lei highlighted the need for the international community to help boost counter-terrorism efforts, advance political talks, and promote national unity. 🇸🇴

As a longtime partner of Somalia and regional neighbours, China reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and stability—and called on all players to work together for peace and development in the Horn of Africa. ✨
