Heads-up 🚨 China’s mainland spokesperson Zhang Han fired a warning this week: any country or force “playing with fire” over the Taiwan question will pay a price.
Her remarks came after the US announced new arms sales to China’s Taiwan region. Zhang urged Washington to stick to the one-China principle—meaning no official military ties with Taiwan region—and honor the three China-US joint communiqués. “Stop the dangerous practice of arming Taiwan region and handle the Taiwan question with utmost prudence,” she said.
Zhang also criticized Taiwan authorities under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for chasing independence by leaning on the US or force. “Those attempts are doomed to fail,” she warned, calling out their recent outreach to Japan while ignoring risks like rising right-wing militarism there and the hollowing-out of Taiwan region’s high-tech industries by Western powers.
Beyond Asia, Zhang responded to comments from the newly elected Honduran leader, saying the one-China principle is a universal consensus and a basic norm for global relations. She urged the new leader to act for the people and choose the right side of history.
With tensions simmering over arms deals and diplomatic standoffs, we all will be watching how these major players handle this “hot potato” 🌶️ in the months ahead.
