China and Ethiopia Aim for New Heights in AI, Green Energy & Trade

On Thursday, January 8, in Addis Ababa, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to supercharge their all-weather strategic partnership 🚀.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, kicked off his Africa tour (Jan 7–12) by reaffirming the consensus set by Beijing leaders. Ethiopia, which upholds the one-China principle, expressed thanks for China's long-term support in its economic and social development.

Key areas of next-gen cooperation include:

  • AI & digital economy 💡: From smart farming to fintech, digital platforms can connect Ethiopian entrepreneurs with global markets—think India's UPI and Southeast Asia's super-apps.
  • Green industries & new energy 🌱: Scaling renewable power projects—solar, wind and hydrogen—to fuel sustainable growth and tackle climate change.
  • Infrastructure & maritime affairs 🚢: Upgrading roads, railways and ports to boost trade links across Africa and Asia.
  • Zero-tariff trade 📦: Leveraging China's zero-tariff policy for Africa to make Ethiopian goods more competitive abroad.

Both sides also pledged to deepen exchanges in governance experience and strengthen mutual support in regional and international affairs. China hopes Ethiopia will keep rolling out the red carpet for overseas investors, while Ethiopia looks forward to playing a bigger role on the global stage.

As Wang Yi's tour moves on to Somalia, Tanzania and Lesotho, the spotlight is on building high-quality Belt and Road cooperation that resonates with young innovators and green champions across Asia and Africa 🌍.
