2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges Kicks Off in Addis Ababa

Last Thursday at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges was officially launched, marking a fresh wave of cultural and educational partnerships across continents.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a keynote speech reading President Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter, highlighting mutual learning and cultural swaps as the bedrock of the all-weather China-Africa community. He emphasized the shared rise of the Global South and the need for solidarity against global challenges.

African co-FOCAC Chair, Republic of the Congo's Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie joined the call to deepen ties in culture, education, tourism, arts, and youth exchanges. With over 200 officials and diplomats in attendance, the event set the stage for a year-long calendar of festivals, workshops, and digital collaborations.

Leaders on both sides stressed that 'people-to-people' linkups, from student scholarships to virtual hackathons, will power the next chapter of Africa-China friendship. African delegates praised China's support and outlined plans to work under FOCAC and the Belt and Road framework, championing an open, just, and inclusive Global Governance initiative 🌐✨.

For young creatives and professionals in South and Southeast Asia, this launch is a reminder of the opportunities that cross-continental cooperation brings: think art residencies in Nairobi, e-sports tournaments, language exchanges, and startup pitches that bridge three dynamic regions. Stay tuned for updates on how you can get involved! 🚀
