China Urges UN Charter Respect in Crimes Against Humanity Talks

🌍 On Monday, Chinese envoy Sun Lei urged all UN member states to strictly follow the UN Charter and established international law as they shape a new Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity.

⚖️ Speaking at the first session of the Preparatory Committee, Sun highlighted the need to respect state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the prohibition of force or interference in internal affairs. He stressed that draft articles should reflect both the UN Charter and customary international law, including judicial immunity for state officials.

📝 A key debate is defining crimes against humanity. Sun pointed out that two-thirds of UN members are not parties to the Rome Statute, so its definition can’t be treated as a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, he called for a definition built on broad state practice and consensus.

🤝 International cooperation should be flexible and inclusive, respecting different legal systems and national discretion. Sun also reminded delegates that this stage is a preparatory discussion, not formal treaty talks, and that NGO participation must follow UN rules without undermining sovereignty.

✨ "This convention is vital for global justice," Sun said. "All parties should work responsibly, respect legitimate concerns, and push for the widest consensus." He concluded by affirming China's readiness to collaborate with all members to advance peace and international fairness.
