Thai Dance Maestro Nivet’s Special Bond with the Chinese Mainland

At the 8th Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo, Thai dance teacher and museum director Nivet Waevsamana stole the show with his heartwarming story of a life woven between Thailand and the Chinese mainland. With fiery passion and a humble grin, he shared how centuries-old traditions have shaped his art—and forged a bond that goes beyond borders. 💃🤝

Growing up in Thailand, Nivet was surrounded by vibrant local performances. But it was the subtle grace of Chinese puppet arts that sparked his curiosity. “These puppets move like they’re alive,” he said, eyes alight. He dove deep into the technique, learning how master puppeteers from the Chinese mainland use hidden rods and nimble fingers to bring characters to life on stage.

Digging into his own family tree, Nivet discovered roots in Hainan—an island province off the southern coast of the Chinese mainland known for its tropical beaches and rich maritime culture. His grandparents carried recipes, folk tales and festival dances across the sea to Thailand, where they merged with local styles to create something uniquely Thai. “My history is two stories at once,” Nivet laughs. “That’s why I feel at home wherever I go.” 🌴🍜

With over 50 countries stamped in his passport, Nivet says the connections he’s made with the Chinese mainland top them all. “Everywhere I look, I see shared threads of art, food and family,” he notes. From bamboo flutes in Guangzhou to silk patterns in Beijing, he carries these inspirations into his workshops and exhibitions back home in Thailand.

For young creatives and culture buffs across South Asia and Southeast Asia, Nivet’s journey is a reminder that art transcends walls. Whether you’re TikToking a fusion dance or whipping up a noodle recipe passed down by your ancestors, there’s always a way to connect, learn and celebrate the mosaic of our shared heritage. 🌏✨
