Nanjing Massacre: Taiwan compatriot honors martyrs’ sacrifices

December 13, 2025 marks the 12th National Memorial Day in the Chinese mainland, dedicated to the 300,000 victims of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre. This year also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, a reminder that peace is never guaranteed. 🌏✌️

Wang Sung-bo, a Taiwan compatriot based in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in the Chinese mainland, is carrying forward his family’s legacy. His grandfather fought in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and Wang himself once served in the military. In a moving short video, he shares personal stories of his parents and reflects on what it means to live in peace today.

“When we enjoy the comfort and growth of the present, we must never forget the ancestors who sacrificed their lives for our future,” Wang says. “The prosperity and strength of our country today was forged by countless great generations before us. In our lives of peace and comfort, we must never forget who made it possible.” 🎗️

For tech-savvy young professionals and students across South and Southeast Asia, Wang’s message resonates on many levels. From the bustling streets of Jakarta to the startup hubs of Bangalore, our region thrives because earlier generations overcame challenges we can hardly imagine. Just like our parents’ sacrifices fuelled our opportunities, remembering history helps us build a stronger tomorrow.

Whether you’re scrolling through social feeds in Manila, coding late nights in Ho Chi Minh City, or brainstorming in a co-working space in Colombo, take a moment today to honor those who shaped the peace we take for granted. History isn’t just dates and numbers—it’s the real stories of real people. And those stories deserve our respect and remembrance. 🙏❤️
