Hey folks, here’s the latest buzz from the UN Ocean Conference! 🌊 A fresh FAO report shows that more than 35% of the world's marine fish stocks are overfished, even though nearly 65% are being managed sustainably. Regions like the Northeast Pacific and Southwest Pacific are killing it with sustainability rates of 92.7% and 85%, but places like the Southeast Pacific and Eastern Central Atlantic are still struggling with figures around 46% and 47.4%.
This report gathered insights from over 650 experts across 92 countries, assessing 2,570 fish stocks globally. It’s a clear reminder that long-term, science-based management is our best bet for protecting our oceans. As FAO's director-general Qu Dongyu put it, effective management is a powerful tool in conserving fisheries.
For many of us in South and Southeast Asia—where seafood isn’t just a meal but a part of our culture—the impact is real. Whether you enjoy a spicy fish curry from India, a tangy laksa in Malaysia, or fresh seafood in Thailand, sustainable practices mean our culinary traditions and coastal communities thrive. Let’s support smarter, eco-friendly choices so every bite counts! 🐟
