Portugal Heatwaves: A New Normal on the Horizon?

Portugal experienced a record-breaking heatwave this June, marking its third hottest month on record. The inland town of Mora in the Evora district hit a scorching 46.6°C on June 29—the highest June temperature ever recorded, as confirmed by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). ☀️

Experts like climatologist Jose Alvaro Silva emphasize that these extreme heat events are becoming part of our new climate reality. A mass of hot air from North Africa, trapped by a high-pressure system creating a "heat dome," was responsible for this intense burst of heat.

Ricardo Trigo from the University of Lisbon pointed out that parched soil combined with abnormally warm Mediterranean waters could amplify future heatwaves even further. This hints at even hotter summers ahead if the current conditions persist! 🔥

The situation has serious implications. During the heat alert period, 69 excess deaths were reported nationwide, mainly affecting residents aged 85 and above. With seasonal forecasts predicting above-average temperatures in July and August, experts warn that this scorching trend may well continue for decades.

While these records from Portugal might seem distant, they serve as an important wake-up call about the potential climate challenges we could face globally. Staying informed and prepared is key to tackling our evolving climate reality!
