In a world where geopolitical rifts are rising, fragmented politics won’t fix a fractured planet. That’s where the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) steps up as the top global hub for tackling our biggest environmental threats 🌍.
From December 8 to 12, Nairobi will host the 7th UNEA session, bringing together ministers, intergovernmental bodies, civil society groups, scientists, activists and the private sector. Why? Because challenges like rising emissions, record heatwaves, disappearing ecosystems and toxins in our air, water and soil don’t stop at borders. We need global solutions.
Even amid global turbulence, multilateral environmental action is scoring wins. Over the past year:
- Governments greenlit a new Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution – completing the “science trifecta” alongside the IPCC (climate watchdog) and IPBES (biodiversity watchdog) 🔬.
- The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement came into force, empowering better governance of our oceans beyond borders 🌊.
These breakthroughs prove that when countries team up, we can build a safer, more resilient Earth. As UNEA 7 kicks off in Nairobi this week, it’s time for all of us – especially young changemakers – to tune in, raise our voices and push for policies that protect our shared home ♻️.
