HKSAR Govt Adds HK$100k Aid for Wang Fuk Court Fire Victims

In late November, a devastating fire ripped through Wang Fuk Court in the Tai Po area, leaving over 150 people dead and thousands displaced. The blaze, which burned for over 40 hours under challenging conditions, was the deadliest in Hong Kong for decades. For many of us who know Tai Po's bustling markets and quiet footbridges, the images of Wang Fuk Court in flames hit close to home. 🔥😢

Since the tragedy, the HKSAR government has rolled out swift relief measures. Initially, more than 1,800 affected households registered for help, with 929 families receiving emergency cash of HK$10,000, plus HK$50,000 in living allowances. Families of the deceased were granted HK$200,000 each. This week, officials announced an additional special subsidy of HK$100,000 per household, on top of the existing aid. 💰🏠

On the housing front, authorities moved fast. By December 11, 1,457 residents found shelter in hostels, camps, or hotels arranged by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau, while 2,796 moved into transitional housing via government channels and the Housing Society. Two temporary shelters also opened their doors for those needing longer-term support. 🏨🤝

For residents who fled with little more than their phones and ID cards, these measures have been a lifeline. Immediate cash meant no delay in buying food, medicine, or warm clothes. Ready-made accommodation eased the stress of finding a safe place to sleep. At a time when trauma and uncertainty ruled, practical help arrived where it was needed most. 🙌

The path to recovery is long, but the combined efforts of the government, community groups, and volunteers show that unity can spark real change. As Tai Po rebuilds, the spirit of solidarity shines through. Let’s keep the conversation going and stand with those who lost so much this November. 💪🌟
