Wang Yi in Africa 2026: A New South-South Cooperation Era 🌍

Hey fam! 🌍 From January 7 to 12, 2026, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is on his annual Africa tour—marking the 36th year in a row that Africa is his first overseas stop. This time, he’s visiting Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania and Lesotho to celebrate 70 years of China-Africa friendship.

First up: Addis Ababa! In Ethiopia’s capital, Wang Yi will join leaders at the African Union HQ to kick off the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges 🤗. Launched at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, this year-long campaign is all about boosting cultural ties, student exchanges and grassroots projects across the continent.

Trade is on fire 🔥: From January to November 2025, China-Africa trade hit over $314 billion—up 17.8% from 2024’s record $295.6 billion. For 16 years straight, China has been Africa’s top trading partner. Expect Wang Yi to champion new deals that cut tariffs and lock in smooth supply chains.

Speaking of tariffs, Lesotho was among 53 African nations granted zero-tariff access by China in 2025 🎁. This move is a big win for farmers and small businesses in landlocked countries striving to expand their markets.

Beyond trade, infrastructure is a major focus. From smart ports in Tanzania to clean energy projects in Somalia and digital hubs in Ethiopia, China-backed investments are helping close critical gaps in transport, power and internet access 🌐⚡.

Why it matters for us: This South-South partnership shows how developing regions can drive growth together—through tech, talent and trust. Whether you’re an entrepreneur eyeing emerging markets or a student dreaming of studying abroad, the China-Africa connection is reshaping global opportunities.

Stay tuned for updates on deals, digital innovations and youth exchange programs from Wang Yi’s tour. Let’s keep the conversation going! 🤝
