Tragic Crash: Libya’s Army Chief Killed Near Ankara

Big news out of Ankara: Libya’s chief of general staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Haddad, died in a plane crash near Haymana on Tuesday, Dec 23, 2025. He was traveling on a Falcon 50 jet with four others when the aircraft issued an emergency landing alert shortly after takeoff. 💔

Turkish authorities confirm that after the emergency signal, contact was lost over rural terrain south of Türkiye’s capital. Search teams discovered the wreckage and, sadly, none of the five onboard survived. Prosecutors have launched an investigation to uncover the crash’s cause.

Tripoli’s leadership immediately confirmed General al-Haddad’s death following his meeting in Ankara with Türkiye’s military chief. Known for steering Libya’s armed forces through a complex post-conflict landscape, al-Haddad’s passing marks a major shift for the country’s defence setup.

What’s next? Türkiye’s investigators are combing through flight data and maintenance logs to piece together what went wrong. Meanwhile, Libya’s interim government is expected to announce a successor soon and to honour al-Haddad’s legacy in upcoming military proceedings. 🕊️

Stay tuned as we bring updates on the investigation and Libya’s next steps in leadership. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy. 🙏
