72K+ Migrant Losses: A Wake-Up Call for Global Safety

Hey changers! A new UN/IOM report reveals that over 72,000 migrants have lost their lives or disappeared on dangerous journeys since 2014. Each number carries a story of hope lost and dreams interrupted 🌍.

The report shows that most tragedies happened as people fled conflict, disaster, and insecurity in crisis-affected regions. For instance, last year marked a record 8,938 deaths along perilous migration routes.

The Central Mediterranean route remains the deadliest, with nearly 25,000 lives lost over the past decade—over 12,000 of those after leaving war-torn Libya. Meanwhile, more than 5,000 people died trying to escape crisis in Afghanistan, and the Rohingya lost over 3,100 lives amid their desperate journeys.

IOM chief Amy Pope urged global stakeholders to invest in creating stability and opportunities at home, so migration becomes a choice rather than a necessity. Julia Black from the IOM Missing Migrants Project also warned that data gaps in war zones and disaster areas mean the real toll could be even higher.

For tech-savvy and socially conscious young minds across South and Southeast Asia, this isn’t just data—it’s a call to rethink our global future. Let’s use our voices to spark conversations and push for safer, legal, and orderly migration pathways 🚨.
