African Delegates Harvest New Knowledge at Perennial Rice Seminar in China

In an exciting two‐week journey, 30 agricultural experts from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Egypt, Gambia, and Cameroon wrapped up a transformative training on perennial rice technology in China from May 15 to May 28. Organized by China’s Ministry of Commerce and led by the renowned life science enterprise BGI Group, the seminar delved into sustainable rice cultivation techniques that allow multiple harvests from just one planting – talk about maximizing every seed! 🌱

The sessions were both enlightening and interactive. Willis Abwao Adero from Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization humorously noted, "I came with an empty bag, but I'm going back with a full bag of information," while Allo Amen Dido from Ethiopia emphasized that mastering full-cycle management could truly revolutionize rice production.

Country-specific discussions also kicked off fresh ideas: Nigeria explored streamlined planting methods to drive agricultural transformation; Ethiopia proposed using wild rice genes with genomic tools for high-altitude varieties; Kenya is set to launch pilot trials; and Egypt stressed the need for salt-tolerant rice to tackle saline-alkali soils. All delegates agreed that long-term partnerships between African and Chinese research institutions, along with ongoing technical support, are the key to agricultural modernization.

This seminar coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), highlighting a milestone in the dynamic relationship between Africa and China. As Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning mentioned, these are indeed the best times for unprecedented leapfrog developments in China-Africa ties!

The vibrant exchange of ideas promises a future where sustainable farming meets innovative technology, paving the way for a resilient and tech-forward agricultural sector in Africa. 🚜✨
