Ancient Ice, Future Climate: Unlocking Secrets from Antarctica

For over 60 years, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has been on a mission to explore every layer of ancient Antarctic ice. Their pivotal discovery in 1985 about the thinning ozone layer sparked global measures to protect our atmosphere. 🔍

Now, British scientists, in collaboration with experts from 10 European countries, have extracted some of the world's oldest ice cores—dating back between 1.2 and 1.5 million years. At Little Dome C in East Antarctica, they drilled 2,800 meters deep and retrieved 4.5-meter sections of ice, with each extraction taking about two and a half hours. ❄️

A total of 190 meters of ice have been sent to Cambridge, UK, where they are carefully sectioned into meter-long pieces and kept at -25°C until analysis. These invaluable samples may unlock historical insights that can reshape our understanding of today’s climate changes.

For tech-savvy changemakers and young professionals across South and Southeast Asia, these findings offer a powerful reminder: embracing innovative research and sustainable technology can drive a greener future. Our shared global history might just inspire the next breakthrough in environmental care. 🌍
