Thailand Downgrades Ties with Cambodia Over Landmine Blast

In a dramatic turn of events, Thailand has downgraded its diplomatic relations with Cambodia following a dangerous landmine explosion near the border. The blast injured five Thai soldiers, including one with severe leg damage, raising alarm along the contested border area ⚠️.

Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has responded by recalling the Thai ambassador to Cambodia and expelling the Cambodian ambassador from Thailand. In addition, Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to submit a formal protest letter regarding the incident.

Cambodia, however, has firmly rejected these accusations, stating that the event occurred because Thai patrols strayed from mutually agreed routes as outlined in the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding. Thailand claims that the landmines were newly planted, potentially violating the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention).

This incident adds to a series of tense border events, with a similar explosion wounding three soldiers last week and a recent exchange of gunfire in late May that heightened regional concerns 🌏.
