Myanmar’s Acting President U Myint Swe Dies at 74

It’s a somber moment for Myanmar. Acting President U Myint Swe passed away at 74 on Thursday morning in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital, the National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) confirmed. 😔

He had been fighting Parkinson’s Disease and related neurological issues since August 2024. After treatment in Singapore, he returned to the No. 2 Defence Services General Hospital in Nay Pyi Taw. By July 2025, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the Special ICU on July 24.

On medical leave since July 2024, he transferred his duties to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

His Journey: From Tatmadaw to Acting President

Born in Mandalay in 1951, U Myint Swe enrolled at the Defence Services Academy in 1971 and rose through the ranks of the Tatmadaw, retiring as a lieutenant general in 2010. 🇲🇲

He served as Yangon Region Chief Minister from 2011 to 2016, then was sworn in as vice president on March 30, 2016. On February 1, 2021, after then-President U Win Myint was detained, he became acting president, declared a state of emergency, and handed state power to Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing.

A state funeral will be held in Nay Pyi Taw to honor his service and legacy. 🙏
