Türkiye Quake Rocks Balikesir: 1 Dead, 29 Injured

Hey fam, Türkiye just had a jolt 😱 A magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck Balikesir province on Sunday, sending shocks all the way to Istanbul—some 200 km away!

Rescue teams raced to pull residents from the rubble. Tragically, an elderly resident passed away after being rescued, and four others were pulled out alive. In total, 16 mostly-unused buildings and two mosque minarets collapsed. At least 29 people were injured, but thankfully none are in serious condition.

Aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6, kept the region on edge. Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency urged everyone to steer clear of damaged buildings. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent his wishes for a speedy recovery to all affected.

Türkiye sits on major fault lines—last year’s 7.8 quake in the south killed over 53,000 people and damaged hundreds of thousands of structures. If you live in quake-prone areas—from Kathmandu to Manila—it’s a solid reminder to have an emergency plan, know safe spots in your home, and keep essentials handy.

Stay safe, stay informed, and look out for each other! 🌍❤️

Quick quake tips:

  • Drop, cover, and hold on when you feel shaking.
  • Check on neighbors and share reliable info.
  • Don’t enter buildings until they’re inspected.
