One of Afghanistan’s worst earthquakes struck late Sunday, killing 812 people and injuring at least 2,800 in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar. 😢
The magnitude-6.0 tremor hit around midnight at a shallow 10 km depth, ripping through remote valleys and mountain villages. 🌙 Rescue teams are struggling to reach isolated areas because of rough terrain and bad weather.
“I was studying at home in Jalalabad when the whole room started shaking,” said Ziaul Haq Mohammadi, a student at Al-Falah University. “We spent the night in anxiety, praying the ground would stay still.”
Sharafat Zaman, a Health Ministry spokesperson in Kabul, urged international aid: “We need help because so many people lost their homes and loved ones.”
This disaster adds pressure on the Afghan interim government, already grappling with a sharp drop in foreign aid and mass deportations from neighboring countries. 🤲
Across South and Southeast Asia, we’ve seen communities band together after monsoon floods or typhoons. Now Afghan families need that same spirit of solidarity to rebuild and recover. 🙏❤️
