UK and Portugal to Recognize Palestinian State Ahead of UN Debate

📢 Heads up: Britain and Portugal are gearing up to officially recognize a Palestinian state this Sunday, just ahead of a key UN General Assembly (UNGA) debate in New York City. 🌐

This diplomatic move—part of a wave where around 10 nations are expected to follow suit—aims to put fresh pressure on Israel over the Gaza situation and reignite talks on the two-state solution (the idea of an independent Palestine living side by side with Israel).

Britain’s PM Keir Starmer is set to announce the shift despite fierce Israeli objections. He’d warned back in July that recognition would happen if Israel didn’t take 'substantive steps' toward a ceasefire with Hamas by the start of UNGA.

Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Paulo Rangel, confirmed that Lisbon’s official declaration will come before next week’s high-level conference. France and Canada are also eyeing recognition when global leaders meet.

Israel has strongly opposed these plans and even hinted at potential retaliation, including a warning to take over parts of the West Bank. But UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged countries not to be intimidated by such threats.

The backdrop? Gaza’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, triggered last year after Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel. The region has suffered major destruction, with food, water, and medical supplies in short supply. 🏥🚰

Stay tuned as the world watches how this diplomatic ripple unfolds at the UNGA! 🌏✌️
