Seychelles is gearing up for a second round of voting! The Electoral Commission confirmed that since no candidate secured over 50% in the first round, the top two contenders will battle it out Oct 9-11. In the initial tally, Patrick Herminie of United Seychelles landed 48.8%, while incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychellois Democratic Union (LDS) got 46.4%. Under the constitution, a majority win in round one means an outright victory, so without it, a runoff is a must.
The race isn’t the only story: the National Assembly results gave United Seychelles 20 seats, while the LDS claimed 15. After the announcement, Herminie thanked voters for “making the very wise decision to revisit the percentage of representation in the National Assembly and to give me that support of almost 49 percent so that I can go into a second round.” Ramkalawan, who’s heading to a runoff for the second time, congratulated United Seychelles on the Assembly win and said “I pray only for peace, that we conduct a civilized campaign, and I look forward to this next fight.”
📅 Runoff voting is set for Oct 9-11. Who will clinch Seychelles’ top post? Stay tuned for live updates! 🔍🇸🇨
