EU Leaders Condemn Israel’s Gaza-Bound Flotilla Intercept

European capitals are abuzz after Israel intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla on Wednesday. The convoy—around 50 vessels carrying over 500 volunteers from more than 40 countries—aimed to break the naval blockade and deliver food and medical aid to Palestinians.

Portugal was first to speak up: authorities confirmed three of its citizens, including a member of Parliament, were detained. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promised full consular support from the embassy in Tel Aviv to secure their safe return.

Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto slammed the move, authorizing a navy unit to head for the area in case a rescue is needed. France and Spain also voiced strong concern, urging Israel to guarantee the safety and consular rights of their nationals.

On Telegram, flotilla organizers denounced “active aggression” at sea—ships rammed, water cannons used—while stressing that all crew are unharmed. They called these actions illegal attacks on unarmed humanitarian vessels.

For young change-makers in South and Southeast Asia, this episode underlines the power of global solidarity and the ongoing challenges of delivering aid in conflict zones. 🌍✌️
