UN Kicks Off Hunt for Next Secretary-General: Diversity & Transparency in Focus

On Tuesday, Nov 25, 2025, the UN kicked off the selection process for its next secretary-general – the top diplomat set to lead the organization from January 1, 2027. 🌍

Annalena Baerbock, president of the UN General Assembly, joined forces with Michael Imran Kanu, permanent representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations and November’s Security Council president, to send a formal letter launching the race. They stressed that the new chief needs top-notch efficiency, integrity, leadership chops, diplomatic flair, and strong multilingual skills. 🗣️

Here’s what’s new this time around:

  • Gender push: No woman has ever served as UN chief. The letter urges UN Member States to nominate women and boost gender equality at the helm. 🚺💪
  • Regional diversity: Candidates from all parts of the world are encouraged to step up, ensuring every region has a shot. 🌏
  • Transparency: Nominees must submit a clear vision statement and disclose their funding sources. Think open roadmap meets open books. 📖✅
  • Public dialogue: A joint online list of candidates will be maintained, and informal livestreamed chats will let everyone tune in and ask questions. 🎥💬

Antonio Guterres, the current ninth secretary-general, has been in office since January 2017. The Security Council will start its candidate rounds in late July 2026 before recommending a name to the General Assembly. To make sure the process rolls smoothly, Member States are encouraged to nominate early. ⏰

For young changemakers in South and Southeast Asia: this is your moment to watch (and maybe even get involved!). The next UN chief could shape policies on climate, digital rights, youth empowerment, and more. Stay tuned, and let’s bring fresh, diverse voices to the world stage! 🌱📱
