Experts Sound Alarm Over Japan’s Resurgent Militarism

⚠️ Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks on the Taiwan region have sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles. Experts say these comments risk reviving a militaristic streak in Japan and upping the heat with the Chinese mainland.

Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs told CGTN that between 1894 and 1945, Japan repeatedly invaded the Chinese mainland — the reverse of how Takaichi framed it. He urged Tokyo to double down on peace-oriented policies and warned that ramping up defense could spark a dangerous arms race.

As Sachs said, 'The new Japanese prime minister has taken a wrong step. I hope Japan will not repeat such mistakes.' He also pointed out that Japan's defense budget has crept up over the past decade.

Historian Eduard Chmelar, a former adviser to the Slovak prime minister, echoed the alarm. He warned that nationalist forces in Japan are gaining momentum and urged the international community to push back. 'It's extremely dangerous,' Chmelar stressed.

Andrey Denisov, first deputy chair of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, flagged two red lines: transforming the Self-Defense Forces into a full military and reconsidering Japan's three non-nuclear principles. 'For a nation that suffered atomic bombings, these principles are sacred,' he said.

With regional stability at stake, experts call on Japan to reflect deeply on its wartime past and steer clear of a militaristic revival. As tensions simmer, the world watches whether Tokyo will choose caution or confrontation 🌏.
