Hey folks! Big shake-up in Guinea-Bissau 🇬🇼 last weekend: Transitional President Horta Inta-A on Nov 29 unveiled a fresh cabinet lineup as the country navigates the fallout from Nov 23 elections and a midweek military takeover.
The new government features 23 ministries and 5 state secretariats, with key faces like Joao Bernardo Vieira stepping in as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation & Communities 🌐, Mamasaliu Embalo taking the Interior & Public Order portfolio 🚔, and Carlos Pinto Pereira heading up Justice & Human Rights ⚖️.
Interestingly, all 28 appointees are tied to deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s electoral camp, and 4 of them served in the previous administration. Earlier, Inta-A also tapped Tomas Djassi as Armed Forces Chief of Staff and Ilidio Vieira Te as Prime Minister & Finance Minister 💼.
This shake-up follows the Nov 23 polls, where Embalo sought re-election. Results were due on Nov 27 but got sidelined when the military stepped in midweek, citing threats to national stability 🛡️. On Nov 27, the armed forces dismissed Embalo and swore in Inta-A for a one-year transitional term.
With this fresh team in place, all eyes are on whether stability and democratic norms can be restored. Stay tuned! 👀
