On Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, clashes between Cambodia and Thailand spread along fresh stretches of their century-old disputed border, sending over 125,000 people scrambling for safety. 🏃♂️🏃♀️
The Thai Second Army Region reported Cambodian forces fired BM-21 multiple-launch rockets into Thai territory early Tuesday, prompting Thailand to respond with air strikes and tank deployments. Thai navy spokesperson Parat Rattanachaiphan also said troops and weapon bases were detected in Trat province’s contested coastal zone.
On Thailand’s side, the army says three soldiers have been killed since Monday, including two fatalities on Tuesday. More than 800 schools and several hospitals in the border provinces have temporarily shut their doors amid the unrest.
Meanwhile, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry alleges Thai forces used heavy weapons, F-16 fighter jets and even toxic gas against military positions and civilians from Sunday through Tuesday morning. Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen told press outlets that its troops launched counterattacks after over 24 hours of non-retaliation to respect an informal ceasefire and allow evacuations.
Seven Cambodian civilians died and 20 were wounded, officials say, as about 54,550 residents have fled to temporary shelters in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey and Pursat provinces. In Thailand, government data shows nearly 500 emergency sites now house more than 125,000 evacuees.
The UN Secretary-General, the European Union and Malaysia’s prime minister have all urged both sides to exercise restraint and halt hostilities. ⚖️🕊️
Young people on both sides are sharing updates on social platforms, highlighting the human cost of the conflict and calling for a speedy diplomatic solution. 🤝🌏
