Earlier this week (Tuesday, Dec 9), Politico published a no-holds-barred interview with U.S. President Donald Trump, who described Europe as 'decaying' and led by 'weak' leaders.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, Dec 8, Trump lambasted European border policies, warning that without stricter immigration controls, 'some European states will not be viable countries any longer.' He singled out major cities like London and Paris, saying they’re 'creaking' under the influx from the Middle East and Africa.
Trump also downplayed Europe’s role in resolving the Ukraine conflict, arguing, 'They talk, but they don't produce 🤷, and the war just keeps going on and on.' He reiterated his call for Ukraine to hold new elections and suggested Russia holds the upper hand.
This hardline stance was echoed in the U.S. National Security Strategy released last Thursday (Dec 4), which pledges to 'cultivate resistance' to the European status quo on immigration and other hot-button issues.
Europe fired back fast. On Monday (Dec 8), European Council President Antonio Costa pointed out that 'allies do not threaten to interfere in the democratic life or the domestic political choices of these allies.' Then on Tuesday (Dec 9), German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called parts of the new strategy 'unacceptable' from a European perspective.
At a press briefing in Rhineland-Palatinate, Merz stressed that Europe needs more security autonomy and brushed off the idea that America must 'save democracy in Europe.' 'If it were to be saved, we would manage that on our own,' he said, while acknowledging America First is America’s choice—just not theirs.
The 30-page strategy devotes barely two and a half pages to Europe, highlighting a growing ideological gap between Washington and its traditional allies. As global power dynamics shift, this transatlantic tug-of-war is setting the stage for an EU that’s more confident in charting its own course.
🌍 For young pros and politically conscious millennials across Asia, this shows just how interconnected our world is. Whether you're following the latest on global security or debating border policies, the US-EU relationship will shape the future we're all stepping into.
