2 Dead, 8 Injured in Brown University Campus Shooting

On Saturday, Dec 13, 2025, a shooting on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island, left two people dead and eight critically injured, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed.

Around 4:20 p.m., students received a text alert about an active shooter near an academic and research area. The message urged them to lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden – and only run, hide or fight if there was no other option.

Law enforcement officers rushed to the scene, but conflicting reports about the shooter's whereabouts created confusion as authorities worked to secure the area.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed and that the suspect was in custody. Shortly after, Brown University updated its emergency alert, warning that "the situation remains ongoing." 😔
