This weekend, US Central Command (USCENTCOM) confirmed that a lone Islamic State (IS) gunman ambushed US personnel near the city of Palmyra in central Syria, killing two service members and one US civilian. Three other service members were injured.
The attacker was engaged and killed, USCENTCOM said. As a matter of respect for the families and per Department of War policy, their identities will remain confidential until 24 hours after next of kin notification.
On his Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump warned, "There will be very serious retaliation." Earlier, Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported that a joint patrol of Syrian security forces and US troops came under fire, wounding two Syrian security personnel and several US personnel before the attacker was killed.
This was the first attack on US troops in Syria with fatalities since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad a year ago. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those lost in this tragic strike 🙏.
