China to Impose Up to 42.7% Duties on EU Dairy Imports

Gear up, foodies and trade buffs 🍽️🧀! China’s Commerce Ministry announced on Monday that starting tomorrow, December 23, it will slap provisional anti-subsidy duties of 21.9% to 42.7% on select dairy products from the European Union.

According to the ministry, certain cheeses—including fresh and processed cheese, curd, and blue cheese—plus some milk and cream are funded by EU subsidies that have been hurting China’s domestic dairy industry.

This comes after an anti-subsidy probe launched in August 2024 at the Dairy Association of China’s request. Investigators linked those EU subsidies to “substantial damage” for local farmers and producers.

These provisional duties will stick around until a final decision is reached in the coming months. If you’re planning a cheese board for year-end celebrations or New Year’s brunches 🎉, brace for a possible price bump! 📈

Stay tuned and watch your grocery apps, because global trade moves like this can impact your wallet—and even your Instagram-worthy cheese boards 📲😉.
