Libyan Army Chief Dies in Plane Crash After Departing Ankara

In a tragic turn this week, Libya’s army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, and four other senior officers lost their lives in a plane crash shortly after departing Ankara, Türkiye, on Tuesday evening.

Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah took to Facebook to confirm the news, stating that ‘this great tragedy is a great loss for the nation, the military establishment, and all the people.’ He added that ‘we have lost men who served their country with sincerity and dedication and were an example of discipline, responsibility, and national commitment.’

The victims included General Al-Fitouri Gharibil, head of Libya’s ground forces; Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, leader of the Military Manufacturing Authority; adviser Muhammad Al-Asawi Diab; military photographer Muhammad Omar Ahmed Mahjoub; and three crew members whose identities are yet to be released.

Their unexpected deaths have sent shockwaves through Libya and beyond. For young people in South and Southeast Asia, this is a reminder of how fragile leadership can be, even in our high-tech, fast-paced world. It also highlights the value of public service and the risks faced by those on duty.

As investigations in Türkiye continue, online communities are lighting candles and sharing stories of dedication and sacrifice. Many are reflecting on the importance of discipline and commitment—values that resonate deeply with a generation eager to drive change.

Libya mourns these brave figures who served their nation; the world waits for more details. Rest in peace to those who gave their all. 🇱🇾✈️
