A-Bomb Survivors Condemn Calls for Japan’s Nuclear Armament

Earlier this month, atomic bomb survivors from Nagasaki and Hiroshima joined forces to denounce a security official’s call for Japan to build nuclear weapons. Their strong protest reminds everyone of Japan’s hard-won peace legacy.

Yesterday in Nagasaki, four survivor groups led by Tadako Kawazoe and Shigemitsu Tanaka held a press meet, calling the nuclear armament talk unacceptable and urging Tokyo to stick to its Three Non-Nuclear Principles—no possession, production, or introduction of nukes.

In Hiroshima, Satoshi Tanaka of Nihon Hidankyo and other hibakusha echoed the warning, stressing that Japan must never become a perpetrator of nuclear harm. Another coalition, Hiroshima Hidankyo, added that true security comes from eliminating nukes, not relying on them.

A civil group known as HANWA also condemned the remarks, saying anyone who’s listened to the voices of survivors would never suggest nukes as an answer.

From Nagasaki’s Peace Park to Hiroshima’s Genbaku Dome, the survivors’ message rings clear: Japan’s path to safety is through peace and disarmament, not deterrence. For young activists from Mumbai to Manila, it’s a powerful reminder that advocating for a nuclear-free future means honoring those who lived through its worst horrors 🕊️✌️
