🕊️ At the third Special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on Saturday, December 27, Thailand and Cambodia, with ASEAN observers, inked a fresh ceasefire agreement to halt recent border clashes.
Negotiations kicked off at 9:40 a.m. local time at a checkpoint in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. This year saw multiple flare-ups: on July 24, armed clashes broke out, and on December 7, intense fighting forced over 100 casualties and prompted hundreds of thousands to flee their homes.
Earlier efforts included an August 7 consensus in Kuala Lumpur to keep troop deployments steady, and a joint peace statement at the ASEAN Summit on October 26. From December 24 to 26, border delegates met to prep for today’s signing.
While challenges remain, today’s agreement offers hope to border communities and boosts regional stability. For backpackers exploring Angkor Wat or island hopping in Phuket, a calmer border spells safer adventures. Here’s to lasting peace! 🤞
