Last night as the world rang in 2026, a deadly drone strike hit Kherson’s local cafe and hotel, killing at least 24 and injuring over 50. 😢
According to Vladimir Saldo, head of the Kherson region, three Ukrainian drones—one carrying an incendiary mix—struck a cafe where people were celebrating New Year’s Eve. The blast and ensuing fire trapped many inside; firefighters only managed to put out the flames by early Thursday morning.
Medical teams are racing to save the wounded, and regional authorities have promised support for victims and their families. There’s no immediate comment from Ukraine’s military.
For many young people in South and Southeast Asia, gathering at cafes and hotels to welcome the New Year is a familiar ritual—one that turns into a harsh reminder of how conflict can upend even the happiest moments. Our hearts go out to everyone affected. 💔
We’ll keep you posted as more details come in.
