As of January 2026, over 1 million people in Gaza – that's about every other resident – still urgently need safe, dry shelter, the UN spokesperson revealed on Friday. Despite a recent ceasefire, harsh winter weather is soaking makeshift tents, leaving families exposed to rain, wind and even seawater waves. ❄️🏠
Since the truce, aid groups supported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have distributed thousands of tents and hundreds of thousands of tarpaulins – think heavy-duty plastic sheets – to help the most vulnerable. But with winter in full swing, many still struggle to stay dry and warm.
Water, sanitation and hygiene teams are also battling a growing solid waste problem. Damaged infrastructure, fuel shortages and blocked access to landfills mean garbage is piling up. Yet UNICEF-backed crews have managed to clear about 1000 tonnes of waste every month – a small but vital win for health and hygiene. 🧼🌍
The UN Development Programme noted in December that only a handful of temporary dumping sites are operational, worsening environmental and public health risks. Meanwhile, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, which brings together UN agencies and partners, called on Israeli authorities to lift planned bans on many international NGOs, stressing their key role in keeping aid flowing in the occupied Palestinian territory.
For young global citizens, this crisis is a stark reminder of how conflict and climate can collide, creating urgent humanitarian needs. Stay informed and stay compassionate – your voice and awareness can make a difference. ❤️
