China Condemns US Venezuela Raid at UN Security Council

Earlier this week, at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, China’s deputy permanent representative Sun Lei called out the US over its January 3 military operation in Venezuela. 🌐

"The US actions are unilateral, illegal and pure bullying," Sun said, demanding the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

On January 3, US forces seized Maduro and Flores and brought them to New York to face federal drug- and weapons-related charges. This move, China argues, ignores Venezuela’s sovereignty (its right to self-govern) and breaches core UN rules: non-interference, sovereign equality, and no use of force. ⚖️

So what does this all mean? "Unilateral" means acting alone without international approval. "Sovereignty" is about respecting each nation's freedom to make its own choices. By sidelining diplomacy, Sun warned, the US risks peace not just in Latin America but beyond.

Sun also pointed to past US interventions—from Central America to the Caribbean—that, in his view, led to deeper conflicts and hardship rather than peace. "No country is the world's judge or police," he stressed. ✋

Wrapping up, Sun reaffirmed China’s support for Venezuela’s right to chart its own path. He said China is ready to team up with regional partners to promote peace, fairness, and stability. 🤝

Across social platforms—from Mumbai’s Twitter spaces to Jakarta’s Instagram feeds—young netizens are buzzing about the fallout. Will diplomacy win out? Only time will tell. ⏳
